Black Dog Inn - A traditional 16th-century inn with real ales, en-suite rooms, and access to Peak District hiking trails

Recommended in the Good Pub Guide, Black Dog Inn features a range of well-kept beers and cask ales, including rotating guest options from breweries across Britain. The double, twin, and family rooms offer private bathrooms with walk-in showers, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles. The pub includes traditional snugs, coal fires, and a sun-trap beer garden with a covered courtyard. Ward's Reservoir is 0.5 km away, while hiking trails near Round Loaf and Great Hill are within 4 km. Cyclists and hikers frequent the inn, and a continental breakfast is available each morning at Black Dog Inn.

Pros

The pub maintains a selection of over 100 gins, 123 malt whiskies, and locally sourced cask ales.

The beer garden and courtyard provide outdoor seating surrounded by flowering tubs and raised beds.

Three en-suite rooms include modern amenities like walk-in showers and flat-screen TVs.

Cons

The inn does not have an on-site restaurant for dinner service.

Limited public transportation options make car access preferable.

dated decordripping shower
The room seemed quite basic. Its decor looked dated. a thorough update would improve things considerably. i also had an issue with the shower. It dripped constantly throughout the night. the experience wasn't terrible, but some attention to detail would make a big difference.

the staff were friendly, and the pub food was great. the room was cozy, clean, and comfortable (it was like a home away from home). i especially appreciated the separate entrance to the hotel rooms, so i didn't need to walk through the pub.
the shower had poor water flow. i also wish there was a notice clarifying that breakfast is not served on weekdays.

Comfortable stay near West Pennine Moors

great locationample parkingfantastic food
I found the location excellent, especially its proximity to the West Pennine Moors. The atmosphere gave off a friendly, local village vibe. Parking was ample, and the food was fantastic. Victoria, the pub manager, stood out as cute and accommodating when I arrived late due to traffic.
The family room bed was a 4ft bed and a single bed, and the room itself felt quite cold.

The staff was very helpful. The building has a historic feel and the room was quite comfortable. The setting is lovely with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.. It was nice.
The bathroom was not properly cleaned. I noticed a dirty toilet upon arrival. I was given two bedroom keys instead of one for the bedroom and one for the main building.
